A Kingdom In My Breast

The poor yield to the rich, the common people to the upper ten, the servants to their masters, the ignorant to the scholars; but there is nobody who does not imagine that he is really better than the others. Everyone flatters himself and carries a kingdom in his breast. Everyone is self-complacent and passes censure on the ideas and conduct of others, and, if there is a quarrel there is an eruption of poison. Many discover some gentleness in others as long as they find everything pleasant and amiable; but how many keep their good humor, if they are disturbed and irritated? — John Calvin, Golden Booklet of the True Christian Life 2.4.3
